He knows he can't trust her, because he is forcing her compliance and he feels that his need for a place to rest and formulate a plan of action is more important than acting in a civilized manner. He makes her lay down next to him because at this point he has no idea who he can trust and he needs to sleep. He uses the psychology involved with concept of being held at gunpoint to keep her compliant. Only then does he realize that he had to randomize his actions. He picks Faye Dunaway at random, because he first follows a predictable pattern of going to his own home, and going to see the one person who had been sick that day (and not come into work) only to stumble onto suspicious people in both locations. He wasn't trained as a field agent with the CIA, but he did have previous military experience. The location where he worked was dedicated to examining every book possible, to look for plots and stories that were similar to existing or planned CIA operations. Has anyone else seen it? What do you think? It just strikes me as a strange option to add in the film. It strikes me more as Stockholm syndrome than an actual romantic relationship. But then he kidnaps this woman and then a "love" plot. You have plenty of sympathy for the guy in the beginning, he seems friendly, he gets along with all of his coworkers, and then they are all murdered and you feel for the guy. It is a very puzzling choice to have this in the movie at all, it makes Reford's character extremely unlikeable. Coming back later, he unties her and .love with him? They have sex and she helps him out a bit more with investigating only for him to send her off a few scenes later. Later that day, he goes out to investigate but doesn't trust leaving her alone in fear she will go to the cops, so he ties her up and gags her and heads out. Back at her house, he forces her to lay in bed with her and sleep next to him so he can rest, threatening to kill her if she even tries to get out of bed. Anyway, while trying to hide, he encounters Dunaway's character and holds her at gunpoint and demands he takes her back to her house to help hide him. He's not a field agent and has no training but he reads a lot so he can handle himself in a fight. Redford's character works for the CIA as some bookkeeper looking for codes and such, and a hit was put on his building and all of his coworkers were gunned down expect for him and now he is on the run from his own government. I don't want to say it was bad, it certainly had some high tension moments and awesome cinematography but I'm quite confused by a few choices that made it into the film, especially around Faye Dunaway's character. Did a little reading into it before watching it and I was excited about the premise, Robert Redford, Max von Sydow, Faye Dunaway in a political thriller, sign me up. (not what this post is about but I would suggest doing it! On top of that, hospitals in the city are demanding a negative COVID-19 test before seeing patients, which has already resulted in incidents such as a pregnant woman miscarrying, a heart attack victim dying for lack of treatment, and injured children waiting over a day to see a doctor. Most top-tier personnel in Xian are supervising the city’s mass testing, leaving less-qualified personnel struggling to fill the gaps. The Chinese hospital system is tiered: The most qualified doctors and nurses work in central, rich hospitals, and less qualified ones work in outlying hospitals and community centers. Xian’s health care system is also under strain-not from coronavirus cases, but from the pressure of mass testing and bureaucratic requirements. The Xian government will likely see more firings-and possibly prosecutions-as it pays the cost of public failure. Two senior Yanta officials have been fired Christian Goebel, an expert on Chinese local government, points out that this follows a pattern of the central government scapegoating locals for failures. 17 and briefly reopened before the citywide shutdown. The worst shortages seem to be in the central district of Yanta, a wealthy and densely populated area that was put in localized lockdown on Dec. It helps that many households stocked up on supplies this past November after the central government warned that winter lockdowns were likely. The government has started supplying vegetables to compounds, where local committees distribute them to residents, especially the elderly. One household member is usually allowed to make a grocery run every two days, but most stores are closed, and those that are open are understocked. Many stories from Xian resemble those from the first weeks of lockdowns in January and February 2020.įood is a key issue. The scale of the lockdown in Xian has caused significant problems, resulting in small but angry outcries from locals popping up online-usually centered around groceries. Centralized quarantine was a vital part of the success of the 2020 lockdown, significantly reducing household spread. China has also imposed centralized quarantine measures, in which COVID-19 patients and those exposed to the virus stay in mandated facilities. Even before 2020, the state had implemented surveillance infrastructure for political control, using technology ranging from simple cameras to facial recognition.Ĭhinese cities rely on many people to implement lockdowns, including police, chengguan (security personnel who enforce regulations, often harassing street vendors), and residents’ committees. Rural villages often have only a single road out. Most urban Chinese live in walled compounds with large apartment buildings, with controllable entry and exit points. Pandemic lockdowns have proved especially effective in China for several reasons. It is not yet confirmed if any of the cases are the omicron variant, but given the speed of the outbreak, it seems possible. Apart from a small number of essential workers, residents can only leave their homes for very limited grocery runs.Īround 1,800 people with confirmed symptomatic COVID-19 cases are in centralized quarantine as of Saturday, so were over 42,000 close contacts. 23, 2021, amid China’s worst COVID-19 outbreak since 2020. Prepare beforehand by installing a night light. For example, if you get up at night to go to the bathroom, do not turn on the light. So it is important to expose yourself to the light during the waking hours as much as possible, and conversely, do not expose yourself to bright light when it is dark outside. Light suppresses the secretion of the sleep-inducing substance melatonin.Use light to regulate your internal clock. Instead, step into the sun to stimulate your body and help retrain your inner clock. If you nap, the sleep pressure decreases and makes it harder to fall asleep at night. The drive to sleep increases throughout the day. But it could backfire! Longer daytime naps could make it harder for you to get a full night’s sleep. Shutting your eyes mid-day is tempting, especially if you’re feeling sluggish. It stimulates your brain and makes sleep difficult the same way sunlight does. Electronics’ high-intensity light hinders melatonin, a hormone that triggers sleepiness. Also, avoid screen time close to bedtime. One option: giving your child one a warm bath, reading him a book, and snuggling together before lights out. For young children, it's absolutely critical that they have a routine during bedtime. That's what helps create a powerful signal for sleep. When daylight saving ends, it's especially important to stick with a bedtime routine, as your child is now dealing with a change in schedule that might throw him off. Turn off the television and pick up a non-suspenseful book. You don’t need to do things in a certain order, but you should make a habit of slowing your body down. Raising your body’s core temperature can make it harder to fall asleep, so avoid heavy workouts within four hours of bedtime.īedtime routines aren’t just for kids. Be consistent with eating, social, bed and exercise times, too. If you usually wake at 8 a.m., do it the morning of the time change, if you can (although the clock says 9 a.m.). In autumn, keep things as close to normal as possible. For kids, when daylight saving time ends in the fall, this gradual approach can still help - follow the same guidelines - just push the wake up time and bedtime a little later rather than earlier each day as you would do in the spring. Roughly ten days before falling back, go to bed and wake up 10 minutes to 15 minutes later each day. That night, you may not be able to fall into your normal sleep rhythms an hour earlier than you’re used to, and you won’t get as much quality sleep as you need.įor your health and safety, here are some tips for dealing with the time change: When the clocks move forward in the spring, you'll be robbed of an hour of sleep. It may be harder to stay up an hour later and wake up an hour later when your body and internal clock is used to a different schedule and can affect your quality of sleep when a different schedule is forced upon it. Why is the change of one hour so hard? In the fall, when you’ve gained an hour of sleep, you might not feel tired, but you may get cranky when you have to wait an extra hour before your lunch break or when it feels like work should have ended an hour ago. One study showed fatal traffic accidents increase the Monday after both time changes. If your sleep cycle is out of whack, driving can be a bad idea. It’s just an hour, but it’s asking sleep deprived people to alter their circadian clock! In some cases, the time shift can be dangerous. In this situation, you may well experience the decrements of performance, concentration, and memory common to sleep-deprived individuals, as well as daytime sleepiness. If you are sleep-deprived already, getting by on six hours, you're probably in a bit of trouble, especially if you consume alcohol or caffeine close to bedtime. If you are getting seven to eight hours of sound sleep and go to bed a little early the night before, you may wake up feeling refreshed. Until then, falling asleep and waking up later can be harder. It can take the body up to a week or more to adjust. Time changes in the fall and spring inevitably alter people’s schedules. But taking advantage of that extra rest and keeping the benefit can be tough. Nearly everyone looks forward to “falling back” and claiming that extra hour of sleep in autumn. In the U.S., each time zone switches at a different time. on the second Sunday in March and reverts to standard time on the first Sunday in November. The United States begins Daylight Saving Time at 2:00 a.m. It’s coming on November 6th at 2am! We will all “FALL BACK” and have to adjust to Daylight Saving Time!ĭaylight Saving Time (DST) is the practice of setting the clocks forward one hour from standard time during the summer months, and back again in the fall, in order to make better use of natural daylight. By modern standards, the Stache has gotten a little stale and is due for an update into a more modern progessive Trailbike. Stems longer than 50mm feel weird.īy comparison, the Stache has wider rims and tires, less travel, longish stem, and old-school less-progessive geometry. I’ve been using 35-40mms stems for a while and I love how they work. Trailbikes with this geometry get glowing reviews. Progessive Trailbike geometry with a 75-76 degree seattube and a 66-67 degree headtube and a long enough toptube so that 35-50mm stems work. A 130-140mm fork which seems to be just the right length for a Trailbike. I’ve been riding this wheel for a while now and I love it. 2.8 Trail tires like the Teravail Coronados (not Enduro tires which are too heavy and slow rolling) mounted on i33 rims (which would then have a true tire width of 2.7). In my opinion, the perfect 29+ hardtail Trailbike would be built his way. To my way of thinking, the perfect Plus tire would measure a true 2.7 width when mounted on an i33 rim. A 2.8 tire mounted on an i33 rim would shrink to 2.7 width. A 2.6 tire mounted on an i45 rim would puff out to 2.7 width. I think using 2.6 or 2.8 tires will improve the bikes performance without losing the Plus goodness. Something like a 2.6 Maxxis Minion on the front and a 2.6 Maxxis Rekon on the back could be quite good.ĭon’t be afraid to put narrower tires on your Stache. Almost every tire company now makes 29×2.6 tires. In the opposite way, when you put a 2.8 tire (which are made for i40 rims) on a narrower i33 rim the tire gets narrower and becomes a 2.7 tire. When you put a 2.6 tire (which are made for i35 rims) on a wider i45 rim the tire gets wider and becomes a 2.7 tire. I would also consider putting some 2.6 tires on the Stache. I use 29×2.8 Teravail Coronados and I like them a lot. In fact, I would get your Trek dealer to trade the 3.0 tires the bike comes with for some 2.8 or 2.6 tires before you even take the bike out the door. Tires as narrow as 2.6 work fine with i45mm rims. Instead, I would recommend buying narrower tires for your new Stache. However, buying even an inexpensive wheelset is going to cost $600+. Many rim/wheel companies make i35 rims like WTB. The Ibis 938 rims have an inner width of i34. The Sun Ringle Duroc 35 rims have an inner width of i32. All I can say is go to rim/wheel websites and read the fine print to determine inner rim width. It sure would be great if rims/wheels were labeled 29i33 or 700i33 for a 29er size with an inner width i33mm rim. Unlike tires, which have a standard labeling sytstem like 29×2.6 or 700×66, etc., rims don’t come with standard labeling and it can it can be difficult to find a particular rim width. Old school Plus wheels with 3.0 tires on i40-45 rims are just too heavy and slow rolling. My general rule for the best Plus wheels is no tire wider than 2.8 and no rim wider than i35. A 27.5×2.8 tire on an i33-35 is best with a 27.5×2.6 tire on an i28-30 rim being a close second. If you decide to get a 27.5+ bike the same rules apply. The Timberjack has clearance for 29×2.8 tires if you push the adjustable rear dropouts all the way back. If I was buying a budget Plus hardtail, the $1200 29 Timberjack would be my first choice. The least expensive Salsa 29 Timberjack sells for about $1200. There are three hardtails that come with 29×2.6 tires-Specialized 29 Fuze, Salsa 29 Timberjack, Ibis 29 DV9. If the Stache came with 2.8 tires on i33 rims, it would be stellar. Even with the too big wheels, the Stache is a great bike. The hardtail Trek Stache comes with 3.0 tires on i45 rims and that is just too much wheel. I ride the full-sus Trek Full Stache with 2.8 tires on i35 rims and it is incredible. Not many bikes come with 29×2.8 tires but they should. A close second is a 29×2.6 tire on an i28-30 rim. To my way of thinking, the best plus wheel is a 29×2.8 tire on an inner width i33-35mm rim. There’s a reason XC bikes all come with 29er wheels. I think for a Trail hardtail, 29+ is best. Really wish I could go back in time and not purchase this app, very unsatisfied.
