![]() A hugely important play that might not get as much attention because it happened so early: Penix’s 16-yard scramble to pick up third-and-14 on Washington’s first possession. He played eight snaps on Saturday and had one target, yet he’ll be remembered by Husky fans forever.Ĩ. Rivalries can make heroes of less-heralded players, too, and like Corey Williams in the 2003 Apple Cup, Davis now has a chapter all his own. He is setting a high standard for the degree to which a veteran transfer can help transform an offense in one offseason, and he has moved into the realm of future superstar treatment whenever he returns to campus. How many Husky quarterbacks ever have been capable of making that throw, a “hole shot” in front of the nickel back with enough velocity to beat the defender? Penix planted and threw it with confidence, and if not for his goal-line interception, he would have led the Huskies to points on every second-half possession. Considering the opponent and venue, this was a legendary performance - flawless if not for the interception, which he atoned for - and the 62-yard touchdown pass to Taj Davis ranks among the greatest throws by a quarterback in UW-Oregon history. Penix must be included in any discussion of Washington’s best quarterbacks ever. and a UW offense that continues to carry this team to victories, and the defense did juuust enough to help them out.Ħ. Yet it just wasn’t enough to overcome Michael Penix Jr. The Ducks totaled 592 yards and didn’t punt. Oregon exploited the Huskies’ defensive flaws to a greater degree than any opponent this season, running the ball right at them with consistent success and hitting two long touchdown passes against badly beaten defensive backs. Hard to believe that won’t happen at some point.ĥ. Think I wrote after the Michigan State game that for all the buzz that win generated, Washington probably was on the cusp of having to give Kalen DeBoer a contract extension and a raise. And who knows? Even if the Huskies come up short of a Pac-12 title game appearance, a New Year’s Six at-large bid isn’t off the table.Ĥ. Well, all they’ve done since is go 4-0 with consecutive Top 25 victories over a pair of Pacific Northwest rivals, and they can conceivably make a run at an 11-win season if they can get past Colorado and Washington State. 8 loss at Arizona State, I wrote that it was time to reset expectations for what the Huskies might be capable of in 2022. ![]() In other words, this is pretty definitively the best Ducks team the Huskies have ever beaten.ģ. And as The Athletic’s Matt Brown pointed out, this was Washington’s first win over a top-10 Oregon team in eight tries. This was just the eighth time the teams had ever met while both were ranked. It also might be Washington’s biggest win ever against Oregon, a heated rivalry that nevertheless has produced precious few last-minute heroics and not all that many good-vs.-good matchups. ![]()
